Norwegian Fjords Cruises
Cliffs, waterfalls and Arctic light — scenery is the star.
Get Free Europe Cruise QuotesA Norwegian fjords cruise is about the scenery between ports as much as the ports themselves: steep cliffs, waterfalls and villages at the water’s edge.
Fjord Ports and Highlights
Fjord cruises usually run seven to twelve nights from Southampton, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Kiel, Copenhagen or Oslo. The most famous stop is Geiranger, at the end of the Geirangerfjord, which with the Naeroyfjord is listed by UNESCO as part of the West Norwegian Fjords. Other favorites include Flam, home of the scenic Flam Railway; Bergen, with its old Bryggen wharf; Alesund, rebuilt in Art Nouveau style; Stavanger, the base for the Pulpit Rock hike; and Olden and Hellesylt for glaciers and lakes.

Plan to be outside for the scenic cruising sections. The ship’s daily program usually lists the times, and the best views often come early in the morning.
North Cape and the Arctic
Longer itineraries sail beyond the Arctic Circle to Tromso, the Lofoten Islands and Honningsvag, the port for the North Cape plateau. In early summer the sun does not set this far north. In winter, some lines offer northern lights voyages along the coast; sightings are never guaranteed, but the long nights and clear skies give you a chance.

Packing and Planning for the Fjords
- Layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes — fjord weather changes by the hour.
- Binoculars and a fully charged camera for scenic cruising.
- Norway uses the Norwegian krone and is not in the euro zone; cards are widely accepted.
- Popular excursions such as the Flam Railway sell out early in summer — book ahead.
- Norway is part of the Schengen area, so the same entry rules apply as elsewhere in mainland Europe.

Norwegian Fjords FAQ
When is the best time for a Norwegian fjords cruise?
Most fjord cruises sail from about May to September. Late spring brings snow on the peaks and full waterfalls; midsummer brings the longest days. Northern lights voyages to the Arctic coast run in the dark months instead.
Will I see the midnight sun?
Only north of the Arctic Circle in early summer. Itineraries that reach Tromso, Honningsvag (for the North Cape) or the Lofoten Islands in June and July offer the best chance.
Can large ships still visit the World Heritage fjords?
Yes, for now. Norway requires passenger ships under 10,000 gross tons to be zero-emission in its World Heritage fjords from 2026 and plans to extend the rule to larger ships from 2032, so itineraries for big ships may change in the years ahead.
