Scandinavian capitals, Hanseatic towns and long summer evenings.

The Baltic Capitals Route
A classic Baltic cruise starts in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Kiel or Amsterdam and links several capitals in a week to twelve days: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn, often with Riga, Gdansk (via Gdynia), Visby on Gotland or Warnemunde, the port for Rostock and a long day trip to Berlin. Since 2022, Western cruise lines have not included St. Petersburg, and itineraries now spend more time in the Nordic and Baltic states.
Copenhagen is the region’s busiest cruise hub, with Nyhavn, Tivoli Gardens and the Little Mermaid within easy reach. Stockholm is approached through a long archipelago of thousands of islands — be on deck for the sail-in. Tallinn has one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval old towns, a short walk from the cruise pier. Helsinki pairs a compact center with the sea fortress of Suomenlinna.

Western Europe and the North Sea
Northern Europe itineraries also run along the North Sea coast: Amsterdam or Rotterdam, Zeebrugge for Bruges, Le Havre for Normandy and Paris, Hamburg and the Channel ports. Many are round trips from Southampton or Dover. Our sister site British Isles Cruises covers the UK and Ireland in depth, including combined British Isles itineraries.
| Port | Gateway to | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Warnemunde | Rostock, Berlin | Berlin is several hours each way by train or coach |
| Le Havre | Normandy beaches, Rouen, Paris | Paris makes a very long day; Normandy is closer |
| Zeebrugge | Bruges, Ghent | Bruges is a short ride away |
| Kiel | Hamburg, Lubeck | A common embarkation port for German and Baltic sailings |
Weather, Money and Practical Tips
- The season runs roughly May to September. Expect mild days, cool evenings and changeable weather — pack layers and a rain jacket.
- Currencies vary: the euro is used in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Germany and the Netherlands, while Denmark, Sweden and Norway keep their own crowns. Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
- Midsummer daylight is very long in Stockholm and Helsinki, which makes evening sail-aways memorable.
- Public transport is excellent in Nordic capitals, so independent sightseeing is easy.

Arrive Early, Stay Longer
Baltic cruises often begin or end in cities worth a few days of their own. In Copenhagen, the canals, Tivoli Gardens and the royal palaces are easy to see on foot or by harbor boat. In Stockholm, the Vasa Museum, built around a 17th-century warship raised from the harbor, is the city’s best-known attraction, and the Gamla Stan old town is a short walk from many hotels. Helsinki’s sea fortress of Suomenlinna and Riga’s historic center, famous for its Art Nouveau buildings, are both UNESCO World Heritage sites that reward an unhurried visit.
A night or two before the cruise also gives you a buffer against delayed flights — and Scandinavian cities are at their liveliest on long midsummer evenings.
